The Louvre museum located in Paris, France is one of the world's most famous museums. It is housed in what was once the fortress of Philippe Auguste. The current collection began in the first half of the 16th century with Francois I's addition of twelve paintings from Italy. This royal collection of art grew until it numbered 2,500 pieces when Louis XIV died in 1715. Finally, in 1793 the Museum Central des Arts opened to the public in the Grande Galerie and the Salon Carré of the Louvre. The collections gradually took over the rest of the vast complex in its entirety. The current Musée du Louvre showcases 35,000 works of art displayed thematically over 60,000 square metres of exhibition space.
